“I originally had started at UTEP in my home town of El Paso, Texas for the nursing program there but decided that I wanted to leave town. I wanted to go to spread my wings to go elsewhere in a more difficult program at Texas Tech. So then I started working full time, supporting myself, doing all these things to take care of myself, and during that time I was unable to obtain the volunteer hours in a clinical setting that they were requiring of me. So I didn’t end up making it into nursing school. And in the moment it was a big deal to me.”
