“I was the chair of the lobby task force that was moving the Americans with Disabilities Act forward, but we were just a coalition of organizations that were donating our time. I was working for AIDS action council. We were at the very end of the process of moving the ADA, and we went to the House of Representatives to pass the bill. Out of the blue, a Democrat from Texas amended the ADA to keep people with AIDS from being hired as food handlers, and it was devastating because we didn’t see it coming.”
