“One thing my mom did really well is that she created a space where we could talk about things even if we don’t necessarily fully agree on it … So I was able to talk to her about my point of view and what I saw for myself and the different opinions that I had [about not wanting to go to college]. Then eventually she kind of saw this alternate way of thinking, an alternate way of being, and she was okay with it.”

Career Challenge

I was definitely struggling at the beginning when I was trying to get into different training programs. I was 19 at the time, I was going to all these different interviews thinking the interviews were going well. Then I actually had an interview where someone asked me my age … and after they asked me my age, I could tell the entire energy shifted, like his face shifted, everything shifted. I could tell, I didn’t get the job in that moment. It was really hard at the beginning because I feel like people were looking at the outside and they were looking at what age I was.”
