“A lot of the way we do the news shuts down learning in a part of the audience, especially women. The yelling, the punditry, the shouting, the hyper-negative partisanship shuts down learning for a lot of people. So I thought, what did news differently where it wasn’t all this negativity and anger and rage? And what if we explained things a little more? Could we onboard more people to consuming news?”
Best Career Advice
“If you want to be in journalism—I fully embrace the alternative new media, digital media landscape—I think it’s very important to have an experience in a traditional newsroom at some point, so that you can internalize how a newsroom works and all aspects of it. And then you can take that out and innovate.”
