Interview Highlights

Best Career Advice

“Look after the downside because the upside will take care of itself. I don’t see that as cynical, I see it as realistic … You have to have a contingency plan, ideally multiple.”

Career Challenge

“I had a supervisor at one point where I could not connect with her no matter how hard I tried. I knew it was my responsibility to make the relationship work and I just couldn’t do it … And I lost a lot of confidence in myself. Eventually, I learned I had to stop blaming myself and just acknowledge it wasn’t a good fit, and then I was able to switch to a different supervisor. And I was put in a position that was just a much better fit. And that allowed me to thrive a whole lot more at that organization. Everybody goes through rough patches. Everybody messes up at one time or another. We’re human. I think what’s more important is that you can own your mistakes … When you build that trust within an organization or with your supervisors or team, it’s a lot easier to be able to fix those mistakes without trying to be shameful or hide something.”
